After years of conducting lab-based research in the pharmaceutical industry, I began to crave a role where decisions were driven primarily by data. Although my background was rooted in scientific research, most of my data science experience was self-taught. I needed a platform to bridge that gap; a place where I could apply my theoretical knowledge in a practical, real-world setting. That's when I discovered the Science to Data Science (S2DS) bootcamp.

Stepping Into the Real World of Data Science

Before joining S2DS, I harboured concerns that the industry projects might be little more than shallow teaching exercises. However, those worries dissipated almost immediately. From day one, I was introduced to my team, met our client, and received a comprehensive brief on the project scope. It soon became clear that this was a genuine data science project with real-world deliverables.

At S2DS, every day presented a deep dive into practical data science. The structured scrum meetings and inherent collaborative spirit shifted my mindset away from lengthy hypothesis testing toward delivering swift, actionable results. This immersive environment was precisely the catalyst I needed to transition smoothly from theory to application. Here are some of the most important lessons I learned:

Working as Part of a Data Science Team

Working within a diverse team not only advanced my technical skills but also cultivated essential soft skills like effective communication and teamwork. This blend of talents enriched our problem-solving process and allowed us to approach challenges from multiple angles. Embracing daily stand-ups and sprint planning honed my ability to adapt quickly in dynamic environments, ensuring we were always aligned and responsive to change.

Writing Production Level Code

The intensive, hands-on approach of the bootcamp enabled me to refine my coding skills. I became proficient with professional tools such as Git and Python best practices, ensuring that my code was efficient, maintainable, and production-ready.

Overcoming Challenges Through Mentorship

Working on an exploratory data science project with vast scope was at times daunting. Yet, the mentorship and supportive team environment at S2DS helped me gain clarity and confidence. Regular feedback sessions and a well-structured programme ensured that even the toughest obstacles became stepping stones to success.

Joining the S2DS Alumni Network

One of the standout benefits of S2DS is the powerful post-programme network. With private LinkedIn and Slack channels for alumni, the Pivigo network offers invaluable opportunities to get your foot in the door and jumpstart a career in data science.

Looking Forward

Completing the S2DS bootcamp equipped me with a practical toolkit and reaffirmed my passion for data science. With hands-on experience in tackling real-world problems, I now feel empowered to drive innovation and contribute meaningfully to industry projects. I'm excited to see where this journey takes me next and am eager to continue learning in the ever-evolving landscape of data science.
