We empower participants with the commercial and teamwork experience needed to embark on an exciting career in data science. From Day 1 of the programme, participants are immersed in the day-to-day life of a data scientist through working with clients in a small team and using agile management methodologies. With the mentorship of an experienced data scientist, teams develop deliverables with real impact for their clients in only 5 weeks.

The Programme

S2DS builds upon the data science skills learned during your analytical PhD/MSc to apply your knowledge in a commercial setting. Develop your technical approach, teamwork skills, and business acumen through project work and start your networking journey with others going through the same transition as you. The programme includes many exciting social events as well as a Career’s Seminar to help begin your industry journey.

S2DS Past Projects

  • Large Language Models (LLMs)

    A proof-of-concept project to automate the process of refactoring notebooks into production-ready scripts using LLMs. Established a framework for LLM-based automation and highlighted challenges for the partner to build on.

  • Generative AI

    Leveraged generative AI tools and fine-tuned ML Flow pipeline to predict gender in a journalism corpus.

  • Machine Learning

    ML model using eddy current measurements to predict the depth of flaws in heat exchanger tubes and improve maintenance regimes of electricity generating equipment, to reduce unnecessary downtime and power losses.

  • Natural Language Processing (NLP)

    Improved the classification of food hazard alerts using NLP. Developed an ensemble pipeline that combined rule-based matching and transformers with classifiers, achieving significant accuracy gains.

  • Time Series Clustering

    Developed an automated early-warning model for detecting ground movement. Real-time insights predict ground movement and protect critical assets like built infrastructure.

  • Neural Networks

    Neural network-powered predictive model of CO2 emissions for maritime partner. NN performance rivalled the partner’s incumbent physics-based model.

  • Proof of Concept (POC)

    POC project to scrape online behaviour data and convert into insights for safer gambling & regulatory compliance. Enabled the partner in proactive decision-making and helped to optimise their resources.
